Everyone calls a pool builder in March. That's exactly why you shouldn't.
The spring problem
Texas pool demand peaks March through June. Builders' schedules fill, permit offices back up, subcontractor crews stretch thin, and quoted timelines slip. You'll also have the least negotiating leverage of the year — a builder with a full spring backlog has no reason to sharpen a pencil on price or throw in upgrades.
Why fall wins
September through November is the sweet spot. The summer rush is over, so design consultations happen faster and construction slots open up. Weather conditions are excellent for the two most weather-sensitive stages of the build — gunite and plaster — which cure best in mild, dry conditions rather than brutal summer heat or the rare freeze. Permit offices process applications faster. And a fall groundbreaking typically means a December–February completion: your pool is finished, landscaped, and ready on the first 90-degree day, instead of half-dug in June while your neighbors are swimming.
Winter builds are fine too
Texas winters rarely stop construction for long. Occasional freezes pause plaster and concrete work briefly, but a winter build usually loses days, not weeks. Some builders offer their best pricing on winter starts to keep crews busy through the slow season — it never hurts to ask directly what a January start does to the number.
The timeline math
Work backwards from when you want to swim. A typical build runs 8–16 weeks after permits, plus 2–6 weeks of permitting, plus design and contract time up front. Want to swim by Memorial Day? You realistically need a signed contract by January — which means shopping builders in the fall, exactly when they're most eager to talk.
Bottom line
Shop in fall, sign by early winter, swim by late spring. You'll get more attention, likely better pricing, better curing weather, and none of the June heartbreak. Start comparing builders by city in the directory.
